BORIS BLOCH

After graduation from the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory under Dmitri Bashkirov and leaving the Soviet Union in 1974, following the winning of the Young Concert Artists International Audition in 1976 in New York and the Busoni Competition in 1978 in Bolzano, Boris Bloch launched a career that has taken him to many orchestral engagements, recital series and festivals in different countries and continents.

Boris BlochHe has appeared as a soloist in America with the orchestras of Cleveland, Houston, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Vancouver, St. Louis, Denver, New Orleans, Buffalo etc.

In Europe, Boris Bloch played all three Tchaikovsky concertos with the Staatskapelle Berlin and all five Rachmaninov concertos with the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra. He has been the soloist with the orchestras of Vienna, Berlin, Moscow, St. Petersburg, with the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, the NDR Orchestra of Hannover, the Great Polish Radio Orchestra, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Bergen, Rome’s Santa Cecilia, the RAI Orchestra of Milan, the Maggio Musicale Orchestra of Florence, the National Philharmonic orchestras of Budapest and Sofia, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, the Arturo Toscanini Orchestra of Emilia–Romagna, the MDR Symphony of Leipzig, the Odessa State Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra Capitole de Tolouse and many others.

Among the conductors that Boris Bloch has performed with are Kyrill Kondrashin, Lorin Maazel, Philippe Entremont, Christoph Eschenbach, Gerd Albrecht, Edmond de Stutz, Juri Aronovitch, David Zinman, Pavel Kogan, Alexander Lazarev, Janosz Ferencik, Adam Fisher, Emil Tabakov, Alexander Dmitriev, Hobart Earle, Georg Schmöhe, Michel Plasson, to name but a few.

The festivals Boris Bloch has participated to include the Berliner Festwochen, the Salzburger Festspiele, the Luzern Festival, the Flanders Festival, the Festivals of Stresa and of Istanbul, the Carintischer Sommer of Austria, the Varna Summer of Bulgaria, the Chopin Festivals in Duszniki (Poland), in Marienbad (Czech Republic), the Schumann Fest in Düsseldorf, the Ruhr Klavierfestival, the Piano Festival of Bergamo and Brescia, the "I Grandi Interpreti" in Bologna, the "Rarities of Piano Music" in Husum, the "Outstanding Pupils of Dmitri Bashkirov" in St. Petersburg, etc. etc.

As a conductor and (between 1993 and 95) artistic director of the Opera House of Odessa, Boris Bloch has taken that company to Italy (Tchaikovsky’s "Maid of Orleans" at the Teatro Carlo Felice of Genoa, Beethoven’s "Christus am Ölberg" at the Perugia’s "Sagra Musicale Umbra" Festival), to Bruxelles’ "Palais des Beaux Arts" to Greece etc.

In Germany, Bloch has toured extensively with the Pushkin Opera of Russia with Mussorgsky’s "Boris Godunov" and Tchaikovsky’s "Mazeppa". He has also conducted an all-Mozart program with the Arturo Toscanini Orchestra of Emilia–Romagna, and an all-Rachmaninov program including the Symphonic Dances with the State Orchestra of Tyrol in Innsbruck, Austria.

Boris Bloch has been often asked to be a member of the panel of judges of international competitions and to conduct international master courses, including the established summer academies of Salzburg, Weimar and Santander. He has held master courses for the Accademia Ducale in Genoa as well as at S. Margherita Ligure, in summer.

In 1997, the Public Television of Russia has broadcast a half-hour film about Boris Bloch in the series "Outstanding Musicians of Russia". In 1998 Boris Bloch commemorated the 25th anniversary of his career in a comeback recital at the Concert Hall of his Alma Mater, the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. The Moscow newspaper commented the next day in its review: "Russia must be sorry to have missed this true artist for so long".

Nato a Odessa, ha studiato a Mosca con Dimitri Bashkirov e Tatjana Nikolaeva. Conclusi gli studi, nel 1973 inizia ad imporsi nelle più importanti competizioni mondiali: I premio alla "Young Concert Artist International Audition" a New York nel 1976; Medaglia d'argento al Concorso Artur Rubinstein a Tel Aviv nel 1977; Premio Busoni nel 1978. Nel 1980 compie una tournee come solista con la "Junge Deutsche Philarmonie" sotto la direzione di Kyril Kondrashin. Nel 1990 gli viene assegnato il Grand Prix International du Disque Liszt e "Exellence Disque" per le registrazioni di Opere di Franz Liszt; Medaglia d'oro della Liszt Society di Vienna, è anche riconosciuto come uno dei massimi interpreti del repertorio russo di cui ha compiuto varie registrazioni discografiche, come un doppio cd con l'opera omnia per piano di M. Mussorsgkj; ha inoltre registrato il Concerto per pianoforte di Busoni sotto la direzione di Christoph Eschenbach. Dal 1985 Boris Bloch tiene corsi presso la Hochschule ad Essen; dal 1990 è invitato a tenere corsi di perfezionamento presso la Sommerakademie Mozarteum di Salisburgo e dal 1996 presso la Hochschule Franz Liszt di Weimar. Si esibisce regolarmente nei più prestigiosi festival mondiali e ha suonato nelle più importanti sale concertistiche. Boris Bloch è membro di giurie nei maggiori concorsi internazionali.
